Antique Sewing Box - Carved Wood Heart with Shoes
  • Among the collection of make do and needlework pincushions, I also acquired this wonderful folk art carved wood box. The box is in the shape of a heart, with a drawer that appears to be chiseled out of the block of wood used for the heart. Atop the heart are two ladies shoes, carved from wood, with pincushions on top of each shoe. It’s just an exceptional little box. The heart is chambered on top and painted red—the paint has a great craqueled finish. The sides of the heart and the bottom are painted black. The little drawer has a brass pull—when you pull out the drawer, you can see that the chiseled drawer pretty much matches the chiseling on the inside of the heart where the drawer fits. The carved shoes are lace ups with heels and well defined soles. The pincushions are blue velvet but the nap is pretty much worn away. The bottom of the box is attached with tiny round headed nails. One of the heels has been repaired or replaced. All else is wonderful! On the bottom is a pencil inscription that reads: “From E___ [maybe Ema or Ernie] / Dec. 25 – 1918”. Someone loved the original owner to have made such a fabulous Christmas gift for her. This early 20th century treasure measures 5 ¾” at the longest point x 5 1/8” at the widest. The heart platform is 2 ¼” tall. The shoes are 2 ½” tall x 4” long. The entire piece stands 4 ¼” tall. Wonderful folk art that you should not miss!
