Antique American Hollow Cut Silhouette, Very Well Executed
  • Well-executed 19th century American silhouette of a woman with a hair knot held at the crown of her head with a hair comb.  She wears a ruffed neckline, as was popular in the 1820s.  She has very light pencil embellishment adding to the definition of her hair and a small graphite-drawn eyelash.  This simple silhouette typifies the best of American silhouette cutting.  The facial features, hair style and ruffled neckline with serrated edges shows the simple elegance of this fine art.  She resides in a period black-painted molded wood frame measuring 5" x 4", not including the brass hanging loop.  There is expected toning to the paper, which is a bit darker towards the bottom of the paper (as you can see in the photos.   A few unobtrusive spots in the background paper.  Scuffing to the frame.  Overall, excellent condition.  She would be an excellent start to a silhouette collection or a fine addition to any established collection.  Circa 1820.
