Antique American Folk Silhouette of Man Behind Exceptional Early Glass!
  • Sold

A fine American hollow cut folk silhouette of a gentleman with an uncut lapel and shirt front. This style of cutting the head and the body below the lapel while leaving the shirt and coat details left uncut is iconic in American folk silhouettes and highly collected. You could make an entire collection of these men so that you can study the differences…..a very fascinating collection and study it would make!

The profile is beautifully cut with a slight curve on the forehead to indicate the eyebrow line and a tiny cut eyelash. The silhouettist detailed the uncut area with watercolor showing a high collar, white stock, striped waistcoat and painted lapel. The artist also added painted hair depicting the gent as wearing his hair slightly below the collar. The bust-line termination is beautifully curved in front and back.

He resides in a period brass over wood spandrel frame and an exceptional piece of early glass. I’ve added a photo below taken from an angle and arrows pointing out two big ripples and the shadow of those ripples on the silhouette behind. Fabulous glass!

Condition is of the silhouette is very good with overall toning. The frame has not been polished (thank goodness) and has a few dings as you can see in the photos. There is a brass hanging loop inserted in the reverse top stick. Framed size 5 ¼” x 4 ½”.
