Silhouettes

Antique Silhouette Signed C. Linter, Circa 1780
  • I always get excited when I find an 18th century profile and this is no exception. This wonderful fully painted (not cut) silhouette of a gentleman bears the stamped signature of C. Lintner on the wooden frame backing. It also has a handwritten date of 1753. I have no way of knowing whether the date was written contemporaneously with painting the profile or added later. The RKD Netherlands Institute for Art History in The Hague has record of 4 works by Lintner (it appears that 2 are in the RKD’s collection and 2 are elsewhere). The RKD lists Lintner’s activity from 1768-1845, although both of the profiles within the RKD’s collection are dated 1797. The wig that this sitter is wearing with the natural, uncurled hair over the ears is consistent with a date of 1780 and that is where I would date this silhouette.

Unfortunately, nothing is known about C. Lintner’s life. But you can see three of his other silhouettes at the RKD Explore website (link below). You will see that all three silhouettes have the lively bust termination that graces this silhouette. They are all painted in shades of black and grey. It is hard to tell how detailed the profiles on the RFK website are, but this one is quite detailed, showing the coloration of his coat collar, the ruffling of the fabric of his stock where it is pulled around his neck and tied, how the light changes from the front of his hair to the back. I particularly love the jauntiness of the bow holding his ponytail and how the hair of his ponytail is wrapped except for the very end. This is a well-dressed 18th century man of the Continent.

The silhouette is in excellent condition and housed in the original stamped brass over wood frame. The back has been covered with green felt with a window cut so that you can see the stamped signature…wonderful idea to keep the signature fresh by not allowing it to rub on the wall. Framed size is 5 ¼” x 4 ¼”. Circa 1780. I think he makes a wonderful companion to the Dutch lady with the German hat!
