Antique American School Folk Portrait on Homemade Paperboard
  • American School oil on paperboard folk portrait of woman with big, soulful brown eyes. She smiles slightly at the viewer while gazing straight on. The sleeves of her blue dress are gathered at intervals on her upper arms and appear to remain full below the elbow (the Marie style). The bodice crosses at her bosom and is filled with her lace pèlerine which tucks into the front of her bodice. Her lace bonnet stands high above her head, indicating that it likely covers an Apollo knot. She wears gold drop earrings and a triple gold strand with a large gold bead on the bottom strand. The portrait is on homemade paperboard (much the same as used by the Prior-Hamblen School of artists). Portrait is in excellent condition but for a few small light brown stains. Framed in a period gilt frame which has expected dings and wear. Framed size is 7” x 9”. Excellent price for such a fun early portrait. Circa 1825.
