Antique Watercolor Folk Portrait of a Boy & His Dog
  • To me the big head and tiny hands and feet of this adorable blue eyed boy just screams FOLK ART! The boy’s big, soulful blue eyes gaze at the viewer as he sits at the edge of an outcrop of rock along a grassy hill. His black, brown and white spotted dog sits faithfully at his size, gazing at his master’s face. The young boy wears a navy blue skeleton suit with a white ruffed collar. He holds his peaked cap lies, top-down, with his folky, tiny proper right hand. He crosses his feet just above the ankle—a pose which shows off his tiny feet in black boots.

The watercolor on paper portrait is in good condition with some tiny losses to the gum arabic used to highlight his dark jacket and pants. There is some toning to the paper but you won’t see it unless you unframe the portrait. It is framed in a period, but not original, canted profile maple veneer frame with a brass hanging loop. Framed size is 8 ¾” x 7 ½”. Sight size is 5” x 3 ¾”. There is a crack in the veneer of the frame which you can see in the photo.

A fun piece of circa 1830 folk art!
