Wonderful silk on linen sampler with great decoration.  The sampler is signed at the top "KSS".  Miss "S" worked her alphabet, absent "J" as was common in early 19th century sampler, in bands across the top' then numbers, in the interesting sequence "1215345678910", another alphabet, this time; including "J" but ending with "N".  There is a hole in the linen between the last bands of alphabet between the "A" and "B".  Motifs below the banding are strawberries, dogs, potted flower trees, single flowers, baskets of fruit and two swans on the bottom.  Embroidery stitches include Queen's stitch, French knots, cross stitch, and satin stitch.  Other than the whole already mentioned and the fact that it sags a bit at the top of the original ebonized reeded frame, the sampler is in very good condition. The frame has a ding in the upper left corner edge.  The frame is backed with the framer's trade label, as seen below.  The trade label has some losses and the best I can make it out it says, "Miller [maybe Mueller] & Co. / ______________ Colourmen [?] ' FRAME MAKERS / ___IGH HOLBORN / ___9 Strand, / --AND-- / 2 L___HER ARCADE / LONDON."  Framed size is 7" x 17".  Nice piece that I've had for a while and is a good price for a circa 1835 sampler.

(#1982)   $475
