Back to Silhouettes

This is a lovely example of an American hollow cut silhouette with graphite highlights around the edge of her hairline.  The lady wears a neck ruff, popular in the last 1820s to the very early 1830s.  She is framed in a wonderful molded wood frame with early mustard paint to the outside flat edge and darker paint on the shaped areas.  The frame appears to be completely original in size and finish.  The verre églomisé mat is simply painted with yellow stars and a yellow surround.  The great majority of églomisé mats are painted with gold leaf but having inspected the back of the glass, I believe the églomisé is period and likely original to this silhouette.  The glass is incredibly thin and full of bubbles....a stunning piece of glass.  The last collector apparently removed this lady from her frame, copied the original graphite embellishment to the other side and flipped her in the frame so that the paper showing was bright and without the toning you can see now.  I find the toning minimal and, wanting to show the original graphite embellishment and to match her with the shadow that she has left on the backing fabric as well as the shadow she has left on the wooden backboard, I returned her to her original orientation.  I have placed a piece of acid free ragboard between the silhouette and the wooden backboard.  Framed size 4 1/8" x 5 5/8".

The backboard bears a taped inscription from a former owner saying "Justin Salisbury / Profilist - / Newfane Vt c. 1829".  I have found no information on a silhouettist by that name.  If anyone has any information about Justin Salisbury, please contact me!
