Beautiful American hollow cut silhouette of a lovely young lady with a double neck ruff and an Apollo knot held by a hair comb. Her hair is graphite embellishment around the edge of the profile. The verre églomisé mat is beautifully worked in yellow. The fact that I acquired two silhouettes from the same collection with églomisé mats worked with yellow (as opposed to the more usual gold leaf) might lead one to believe that the églomisé is a later reproduction. However, both mats are worked on very early glass and both show signs of wear. They might have been done later, but I think they are both original....or at least very early. This lovely lady is framed in a lovely gold leaf frame with a twisted rope applied in the cove of the frame. My good friend and antique frame dealer extraordinaire dates this type of frame to 1810. This lovely lady's clothing dates the silhouette to 1820. Although this frame appears to be original size, a taped note on the back of the frame indicates that the silhouette was placed in this frame by a previous owner. Framed size 5 1/8" x 6 1/8" This is a classic early American silhouette and can be either the beginning of a serious silhouette collection or a great addition. (#4304) $525 |
