Peggy McClard Antiques Americana & Folk Art |
Very folky American silhouette with hollow cut head and body. The cravat, shirt front and lapel have been left uncut as part of the background paper, then embellished with watercolor. It appears as if the embellishment for the shirt front is unfinished as the gentleman seems to have part of a striped vest but no buttons. I think that adds to the extreme folk quality of this young man with the well cut head which reveal a gentle quality to his face. The silhouette is shown off in a beautiful mahogany veneer frame with a gilt sanded mat. As you can see, there is a tear at the back of the bustline to the outside edge of the paper and some spotting in the upper part of the background paper. Framed size is 5 1/2" x 6 1/2". Circa 1830. (#4109) $575 Sale Price $425 |
