Back to Silhouettes

<Previous Item       Next Item>

Very unusual American silhouette.  The hollow cut head and body with the uncut cravat, shirt front, and label is scarce and desirable, but the interesting thing about this silhouette is the fact that the embellishment is totally done in graphite (the lapels on this type of silhouette are generally colored in with black watercolor) and the gentleman's stickpin is an applied bit of gold paper with a painted red dot to depict a gemstone.  I have never seen this treatment before, and it makes with well-cut silhouette absolutely charming.  The quality cutting of the head depicts this gentleman as a sensitive and intelligent man.  The bustline as well as the quality of cutting indicates that may be by William Chamberlain, but since the embellishment is so unusual, I don't feel confident in making that attribution.  In a period gilt frame measuring 4 1/8" x 5 1/8".
