Meet Delia Rawson and her mother Elizabeth by the Hubard Gallery.
Elizabeth Rawson (née Leach) was born in Clapham
(south of London) in January 1782. Her father was Timothy Leach.
Elizabeth married Stansfeld Rawson of Halifax (Yorkshire) in 1802.
The Rawsons lived in Wasdale Hall in Cumberland (English Lake District).
The Rawsons had seven children. Delia was born to them July 14,
1809. Delia never married and died in 1870. Elizabeth died
in 1866. This fabulous pair of beautiful women bear the Hubard Gallery impressed stamp signature "TAKEN AT THE HUBARD GALLERY" in the lower left corners of each silhouette. This is Trade Label No. 8 and, although McKechnie tells us that this stamp was used from circa 1835 until the early 1840s, the imbecile sleeves on these ladies dresses date this silhouettes to circa 1820s....meaning simply that McKechnie missed seeing earlier examples with this trade label. The gilt embellishment on the silhouettes is exquisite. They reside in beautiful maple veneer frames with a rich patina and great color. The edges of the frames have some darkened dings (possibly burn marks?) but the marks are unobtrusive and blend well. The outside edges also have some missing veneer, but you won't notice this while hanging on the wall. Delia's frame measures 10 1/8" x 14 1/4". Elizabeth's frame measures 9 1/2" x 13 3/4. The silhouettes are in beautiful condition but for a slight stain at Delia's feet (seen in the photos). Any difference in the brightness of the two silhouettes is a result of photographic ability, not the silhouettes. (#4767) $2250/pair Please see the Silhouettist Biographies page for more information about the Hubard Gallery. |
