Beautiful example of the circa 1835 work from the Hubard Gallery. The profile exemplifies the gentleman’s quiet dignity and is simply and expertly highlighted with Chinese white. In the lower right corner, it bears the stamp of the Hubard Gallery known as Trade Label No. 8. The verso bears the rare Trade Label No. 10 of which Sue McKechnie wrote “the only example known to me is in my collection. . .” Interestingly, this silhouette was bought with a silhouette by another artist from Ms. McKechnie’s collection. The other, however, bears a stamp attesting it from the McKechnie collection, which this one does not. Unfortunately, McKechnie did not identify any of the Hubard silhouettes pictured in British Silhouette Artists and their Work 1760-1860 as being the one bearing the rare Trade Label No. 10, so there is no way of knowing whether this silhouette is the one mentioned. The beautifully figured period bird's eye maple frame is almost certainly original to the silhouette and measures 10 1/4" x 14" with a sight size of 6 3/4" x 10 1/2". (#3743) $795 Please see the Silhouettist Biographies page for more information about the Hubard Gallery. |
