Charles Samuel Hervé III was a miniature painter, silhouettist, professor of music, manager of the Prosopographus Gallery, and fruit farmer. He was a proficient copier as well as a wonderful artist in his own right. His silhouettes are sought for his outstanding use of black highlighting on dark grey paper and wonderful flourishes of gold embellishment. This silhouette is representative of his grand style and includes a wonderfully cut-out and penciled detail of the gentleman's shirt frill. In 5 3/4" x 6 3/4" original mahogany veneer frame with stenciled signature "Hervé 145 Strand" on the backboard. Both Charles and his nephew Alfred worked out of the 145 Strand between 1838 and 1843. As the eldest artist of the family, only Charles used the last name alone. Alfred's stencils used the name "A. Hervé." (#3139) $595 Please see the Silhouettist Biographies page for more information about Hervé. |
