This painted gentleman provides a classic representation of the fine work of profile artist J.H. Gillespie. He is painted in dark grey, with highlights of black pigment enhanced with gum Arabic (Gillespie's "Style 2"). His collar is left mostly unpainted with delicate shadowing done in fine grey watercolor. The gentleman also provides an example of a Gillespie trait that is seldom, if ever, seen in other artists’ workthe eyebrow is painted in with the most delicate of brushwork. The verso of the gentleman’s frame bears a trade label that was unrecorded until the Paynes published this trade label (along with this silhouette) in their recent article. In the original 4 1/4" x 5 1/4" papier mâché frame.
