Back to Silhouettes

<Previous Item       Next Item>

This group silhouette is from the rescued folios of Augustin Edouart.  The identification on the verso of the figures identifies the sitters as “Wm. Lane Hyde Esq., Templeno, nr. Fermoy 20th June 1835”; “Mifs Lane Hyde, Templeno, Fermoy, 11th June 1835”; “Mifs Sarah Lane Hyde, Templeno, Fermoy, 11th June 1835”.  Templenoe is in Co. Cork Ireland.  It is interesting that Edouart forgot the silent "e" at the end of the town!  The grouping is framed with glass to the back so that you can see the keyholes cut by Mrs. F. Nevill Jackson when she restored the folios that had sank to the bottom of the bay and found the identifications written by Edouart.  When Mrs. Jackson restored the folio silhouettes, she generally cut Edouart’s identification from the bottom of the folio sheets.  Rarely, the original pages of the folio could be saved and Mrs. Jackson framed the original paper with silhouettes on one side.  In these rare cases, she would place the silhouettes from the verso onto new paper without the identification on the bottom of the page (which would have become the verso of the silhouettes framed on original paper.  (I hope that makes sense!)  These silhouettes were apparently on the reverse of silhouettes she framed on original paper as they do not have the inscriptions from the bottom of the page.  The verso of this silhouette grouping bears Mrs. Jackson’s collection stamp.  These silhouettes are noted in Mrs. Jackson’s book Ancestors in Silhouette by August Edouart at page 143.  The period bird’s-eye maple frame measures 17 ½” x 13 ½”.
