Wonderful circa 1830 American hollow cut attributed to William Chamberlain. Characteristically to Chamberlain, the head is cut as is the shoulder. The white of the gentleman's shirt, collar and coat lapel remain uncut from the background paper with detail painted in by the artist. This beautiful little silhouette well represents the great cutting ability of Chamberlain. Chamberlain never signed his work. The tiny oval that you see below the figure (where you might expect to see an embossed signature) is a wonderful big bubble in the early glass. In a period half-round gilt frame measuring 4" x 5" (#3844) $450 Please see the Silhouettist Biographies page for more information about Chamberlain. |
