Back to Silhouettes

<Previous Item       Next Item>

Expertly cut 18th century American hollow cut silhouette in what appears to be the original frame with verre églomisé mat. Silhouette is cut on laid paper and backed by black silk that has some shattering from age. At one time, the silhouette was laid in the other direction in this frame and the original front has darkened from light exposure. The silhouette paper has been folded from the beginning to fit the frame and inside the folds the sitter's name was written by a very early hand. The early identification shows the name "Henry B" and a last name that I have trouble deciphering. A later (but probably 19th century) hand wrote "Henry B. Stanton" twice on the side. I have included a scan of the carefully unfolded silhouette in the next photo. It is rare to find 18th century American silhouettes--especially in their original frames. Gilt frame measures 4 1/2" x 5 1/2".

The scan of the unframed silhouette (below) shows the original written name of the sitter and a later (probably 19th century) written name "Henry B. Stanton". Additionally, an even later family member wrote on the backboard "Henry Bliss Stanton our Great Grandpa." My research found a Henry Bliss Stanton born in 1775 in Griswold, Conn. and died in 1810 in Cherry Valley, NY. Mr. Stanton's family first came to America in the early 17th century. As always, genealogy research findings will be provided with the silhouette.
