This is a very nicely executed American 19th century hollow cut silhouette of a young woman with a large hair comb. This lovely lady has a high neckline which is probably some type of tucker. The anonymous artist cut her facial features very delicately, including well-formed lips and a tiny cut eyelash. The curved bust-line termination is unusual and adds interest to the silhouette. Light pencil embellishment around the edge of the silhouette help define her hairstyle and collar (or tucker). The silhouettes resides in a period mahogany veneer frame which measures 4 3/4" x 6". There is a small, tight tear a bit below shoulder level at her back and a small bit of paper loss along the bottom edge of the paper, plus a very small hole at about 7 o'clock, approximately one-quarter inch above the bottom edge. Circa 1820. This is a very nice American silhouette for $200! (#4916) $200 |
