Wonderful American hollow cut silhouette with creative bust-line termination and pencil embellishment along the cut edges of the silhouette.  The quality of this silhouette leads me to think it was possibly cut by William M.S. Doyle, although I've never seen this unusual bust line with the deep dip at the back and the strong downward curve in the middle.  She wears a small knot high at the back of her head and held by a hair comb.  The artist added a feathery note to the silhouette with the embellishment for her hair and the curl falling from over her forehead.  Her tiny cut eyelash and profile are beautiful.  Her lace collar is depicted with light pencil strokes and the fanciful bust line is decorated with pencil scallops.  I acquired this silhouette framed with another and glued to a wood-pulp paper mat.  I pried each of the silhouettes lightly away from the paper mat and framed them each in their own period frames.  You can see some remnants of glue and paper at the corners of the silhouette paper.  There is toning to the paper that had been exposed to the light while still behind the mat.  There is a tear from the top of her comb to the top edge of the paper.  There is also a small tight tear directly off the end of the bust line termination and a small bit of paper loss where her chin meets her neck (which gives her the appearance of having a slight double chin).  The period black painted frame measures 5 1/8" x 4 1/2", not including the brass hanging loop.  This is a very high quality American hollow cut silhouette for a very good price.
