This is a lovely fully painted 19th century silhouette of a woman standing next to a Sheraton chair with her shawl of cape thrown across the back of the chair. She is painted in sienna red with exquisite gilt embellishments. Her dress is of the style called bodice en gerbe which describes the draped front with cross-over to the belt. Her sleeves are semi-gigot. Her lace pelerine is held in place by a gold brooch. She wears a long gold chain which holds something tucked into her belt (a portrait or silhouette miniature or perhaps a watch). Her bonnet is high in the back to cover her Apollo knot hair style and is adorned with lace ruffles to the front and bottom as well as a long untied sash. She holds a kerchief in one hand and the back of the chair with the other. Her shoes peek out from the bottom of her full skirt and she stands on a simple watercolor wash ground. Her half-round frame, which measure 8 1/2" x 11 3/4", was once covered by gilt but the gilt has mostly worn away to reveal the pale peach-colored bole beneath it. The paper has even overall toning. Circa 1825. (#4661) Sale Pending |
