Back to Silhouettes

<Previous Item       Next Item>

Beautiful fully painted (not cut) silhouette of a lady standing next to a Sheraton period chair.  The woman is painted in Venetian red with exuberant gilt embellishment showing the details of her lace bonnet, dress, belt, jewelry, shawl-draped chair, and the rest of this very detailed profile.  The lady's dress with the draped bodice with cross-over folds (bodice en gerbe), wide shoulders, demi-gigot sleeves (full to the elbow then tight to the wrist), belted waist and long skirt showing only the toe of the shoe, date this silhouette to circa 1825.  She wears a short chain with a wide pendant at her throat and a long chain that reaches below her belt and is gathered back up with either a miniature or watch tucked into her belt.  Her lace pèlerine is beautifully detailed, as is her transparent lace bonnet with long ribbons hanging untied from the front ends.  She holds a handkerchief loosely from her proper left hand and her right hand holds onto the chair back on which her shawl is draped.  The period gilt frame has worn down to the rose colored bole beneath....which I think is beautiful and coordinates wonderfully with this silhouette.  Framed size 8 1/2" x 11 3/4".
