Wonderful silhouette, painted on plaster, from the Studio of John Miers (considered the finest silhouettist of the 18th century). The verso of this handsome man bears Trade Label No. 12 which was used circa 1810-1821. Few silhouettes from this studio at this time were all black, making this one somewhat of a rarity. John Field was working with Miers at this time, sometimes signing Miers' name. Meirs also had at least one other artist in the studio at this time, whose work is identified as "X". A comparison of styles attributes this silhouette to John Miers, himself. The strong strokes and dot used in the frill of the man's shirt is indicative of Miers. The papier mâché frame with ormulu surround and convex glass was likely made by Miers' son, William. The use of an anchor in the brass hanger indicates the sitter had some connection with the Royal Navy who commissioned the hanger specially made. The frame measures 6" x 4 7/8". The edges of the frame are a bit banged up, but, as you can see, other than a bit of rounding at the edges, look good straight on. You can see the banging from a side view, but since these frames sit so flat against the wall, no one will know but you. Email if you would like me to take and send photos of the frame edges. The silhouette and plaster are in flawless condition. (#4321) $750 Please see the Silhouettist Biographies page for more information about John Miers and his studio. |
