Back to Silhouettes

<Previous Item       Next Item>

Circa 1840 American School cut & paste full length silhouette of a gentleman with great mutton-chop sideburns, balding head, wearing a coat with tails and pasted to a graphite drawn background of a room interior.  The walls of the room have great chamfered panels with grain painting (at least I assume it depicts grain-painting since 19th century paneled walls would have been painted, not stained).  The floor appears to be either a narrow wood or striped carpet.  A drapery dominates the left side of the profile -- a single drapery background was often used by 19th century artists.  The figure is lightly embellished with chalk lines.   The period bird's-maple frame measures 10 1/4" x 12 1/4".
