Back to Silhouettes

Just in time to give as a gift to your graduate, a scholar by child prodigy Master William James Hubard.  The silhouette card is backed by Trade Label No. 2, used from the end of 1822 to the beginning of 1823.  The label says

Cut with common Scissors

BY MASTER HUBARD,

(aged 13 years)

Without Drawing or Machine

According to McKechnie, Hubard was probably 14 when this label was in use.  I'm always amazed that this young prodigy started his professional career at age 12!  The scholar, who wears a mortar board and robe, is identified in a period inscription on the reverse as "William Newport / Nephew of ___ J No".  I can't decipher the uncle's name any more clearly than that.  The cut & paste silhouette resides in the original papier mâché frame with replacement flat glass.  The frame has all-over craquelere on the front which I think adds interest to the piece.  The frame measures 4 1/2" x 5 1/2".  As you can see in the photos, there are some brown stains on the silhouette backing card.   I've never had a scholar by young Master Hubard so I find the stains a small apology...especially since the silhouette is under $300!

(#4914)    $295
