Back to Silhouettes

Here is a very desirable cut & paste silhouette by Master William James Hubard backed by Trade Label No. 2, used from the end of 1822 to the beginning of 1823.  The label says

Cut with common Scissors

BY MASTER HUBARD,

(aged 13 years)

Without Drawing or Machine

According to McKechnie, Hubard was probably 14 when this label was in use.  I'm always amazed that this young prodigy started his professional career at age 12!  This older gentleman was just a bit behind in the dress and hair styles of the 1820s, as elders often were (and still tend to be).  His hair looks to be a wig and his high jacket collar and possible frilled shirt show that he was a stylish younger man....about 20 years before.  The cut & paste silhouette resides in the original papier mâché frame which has the original convex glass.  The frame measures 4 3/4" x 5 1/2".  There is a small amount of white staining on the profile which is probably due to moisture in the past.  I shows up much more in the photos than in real life.  It's a very desirable silhouette AND it's under $200!

(#4915)     $195
