A beautifully embellished cut & paste silhouette of a young lady by Charles Samuel Hervé II.  The beautiful lady wears a fur trimmed coat (fur trim is at the sleeves and hem of the coat) as well as a well-detailed lace collar.  She holds a reticule or purse.  Her hair is plaited and coiled into a knot mid-way at the back of her head and the front of her hair is parted in the middle and brought straight down to a ringlet that covers her ears.  The costume dates this silhouette to circa 1840.  For some reason, the artist chose to paint her foot on instead of including it as part of the cutting.  She stands on a watercolor washed wide paneled wood floor.  The lower right corner bears the stencilled signature

HERVÉ

145, Strand

This address was used by both Charles Hervé and his nephew Alfred.  However, McKechnie tells us that as the elder artist in the family, only Charles would have used the family name alone.  Alfred's silhouettes are signed A. Hervé.

The beautiful reeded ebonized frame with brass rosettes in the corners measures  8 3/4" x 11 1/2" and may be original to the silhouette.

(#4765)     $1250

Please see the Silhouettist Biographies page for more information about Hervé.
