Lovely 19th century cut & paste silhouette of a young girl holding her doll in one hand and a basket of flowers in the other.  This sweet young girl wears a short-sleeved dress with the V-shaped waist so popular in the 1840s.  Her neckline is cut straight across to the tip of her shoulders and buttons down the front.  The waist is tied to the back.  The dress stops just below her knees so that her ankle-length underpants show below.  The details of her clothing, her beautifully painted ringlets, her flower basket and the detailing of her doll are done with gilded paint.  Her doll has the look of a Milliner's papier mâché doll that is so highly valued now.  The silhouettist provided a light grey wash for the ground and the little girl's shadow.  There are a few brown stains around the edge of the silhouette which are likely glue stains caused by the silhouettist moving the profile ever-so-slightly after first placing it on the backing card.  Framed in a period maple veneer frame with a gilt liner and brass hanging loop.  Framed size is 9 7/8" x 11 3/4".  Circa 1840.  A wonderful addition to your collection of children's silhouettes.
