Back to Silhouettes

Adorable early 19th century reverse painted silhouette on glass.  On the outstretched finger of this very young girl perches a pet bird.  The artist delightfully provided detail by scratching paint away from the glass.  This little child wears a dress with a very low, frilled neckline, short sleeves pulled up by a ribbon and a wonderful flat-topped hat with frilled brim.  The profile was probably originally backed with wax but now looks lovely backed by white silk.  Inscribed on the verso of the backing card is a signature which is in beautiful period cursive, but not very legible.  It appears to say "C Sethutton [?] Profilist, June 1817".  Another period inscription written in a different hand gives the child's age as "2 years 1 month old".  Original papier mâché frame measures 4 1/4" x 5".
