Back to Silhouettes

<Previous Item       Next Item>

Hollow cut silhouettes by Augustus Day (known to have worked in Charleston, North Carolina and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) are some of the rarest American signed silhouettes.  This young boy is a great example of his work, with the boy's head held high, a lovely cut tendril of hair falling over his forehead and his collar beautifully cut.  Beneath the bust termination is his impressed signature "DAY'S PATENT".  The stamp is very light and impossible to read with magnification.  This silhouette may have been one of two cut for the sitter and both stamped together so that only the top one had a strong impression.  I've tried to give you a computer enhanced photograph and, as you can see, even with the enhancement, you can't read it.  But, it is a very rare silhouette by a well-sought silhouette artist, it is a young child, and it is a fantastic American hollow cut silhouette.  In a period veneered frame that measures 4 3/4" x 6".  There is a tear from the front tip of the bust line as you can see in the photos.  Circa 1810.

(#4696)     $950

Please see the Silhouettist Biographies page for more information about Day.
