Early 19th century watercolor portrait of a lovely young, taken possibly as a gift for a suitor.  The young woman's front pleated bodice above a buckled belt, semi-gigot sleeves, and hairstyle, including a small knot of hair at the top of her head, date this lovely portrait to circa 1825.  The young woman holds a book to show that she is educated and a bracelet to show her family's wealth.  The bottom right corner of the paper bears a watermark that appears to say "superfine London Board".  Although such a watermark could have been used by American artists, this portrait is likely English.  In a period bird's-eye maple frame with gilt liner that measures 6 1/2" x 7 3/4".

(#3745)    $725
