Back to Portraits

An unusual and delightfully detailed pair of three-quarter-length watercolor profile portraits, both seated on wooden chairs (which look American to me--although I purchased the pair in England) and facing left. The gentleman holds a wonderfully patterned handkerchief. Don't you love the woman's double chin?! The lady holds a rose and wears embicile sleeves which help date these portraits. Circa 1820. Original rosewood veneer frames with gilt slips. 7 3/8" x 6 1/2".

I apologize for the camera glare which bounces off the left side of the frame and highlights all of the gum arabic in the clothing so that it looks white or as if the gum arabic is flaking (it's not either white or flaking). I tried several shots but had trouble photographing this pair.

(#3825)      $1650/pair
