| Wonderfully naïve pair of
watercolor portraits. The man and woman face the same direction and have
enough of a family resemblance that I would guess they are sister and
brother. The woman's body faces forward while her head is in profile.
Unlike sister's body forward position, brother's body is in profile. It
is likely that the artist found it easier to paint women's clothing in a
full frontal position but could handle the man's jacket, vest, and
cravat better in profile. Circa 1830-1840. A great pair! The framer of the great watercolor pair just shown adorns the back of each 6 1/4" x 5 7/8" maple frame with this trade label. If only the artist had signed the portraits! Oh well, we can't have everything, but this pair has a lot to offer! (#3456) $ 950/pair |
