Lovely circa 1760 portrait miniature atop a perfectly beautiful tortoise shell snuff box with rose gold inlay around the top.  Seldom do you find such early portrait boxes in such fine shape.  The gentleman is painted in watercolor on ivory.  As you can see from the photos, there is a little bending to the gold liner of the portrait glass.  It was likely bent because the portrait and glass were removed for cleaning at some point in its history. The photo (which is greatly enlarged) shows this tiny flaw to a much greater extent than in person.  The box fits together nicely (also a rarity with 18th century tortoise boxes).  There is a tiny nick in the bottom edge of the box (see the photo below).  Again, it shows more in the photo than in person.  The box and portrait are likely French as the best of these early period portrait boxes were.  The box measures a mere 2 3/8" x 7/8" tall.  In all, I just don't believe you can find a better box!
