Back to Portraits

Sometimes I am lucky enough to acquire a portrait that takes my breath away.  This is one of those portraits.  This stunning oil on canvas of a young girl was probably commissioned by her parents as a coming out portrait.  The long, elegant, fingers of her right hand are unadorned.  She holds a book to show that she is educated.  The V-shaped bodice of her dress and the Victoria sleeves (low set, tight at the top and full below the elbow) show her fashionable but simple taste.  Her eyes are large, soulful and beautifully set off by her peaches-n-cream complexion.  Her lack of jewelry and simple hairstyle lead me to believe she might be Quaker.  However, Quakers wore dark colors but seldom black, finding it a worldly color.  This beautiful example of American folk art is beautifully and professionally conserved and has been lined.  She resides in a stunning crotch mahogany veneer frame that may be original and measures 22" x 27".  I don't want to put photos on the website that are too large to fit on your computer screen, but I am happy to email larger format photos to you. Circa 1840.
