Monotone watercolor profile on paper by J.H. Gillespie. Gillespie painted beautiful watercolor silhouettes in shades of dark grey with details added in black and also full color watercolor portraits on ivory.  He is known also for his unique style of watercolor portraits such as this which he advertised as "LIKENESSES, with the features neatly shaded on Black Grounds, in imitation of Copper Plate Busts, at 5s. each."

Gillespie started working as an itinerant artist in England, possibly as early as 1793. He crossed the ocean to Nova Scotia in 1829 and is known to have been working in Baltimore by 1837, then Philadelphia, New York and possibly more of the Eastern seaboard. This beautiful profile exemplifies his beautiful and sensitive work.
