This lovely lady is attributed to J.H. Gillespie who is known as a silhouette artist and for his unique style of watercolor portraits which he advertised as "LIKENESSES, with the features neatly shaded on Black Grounds, in imitation of Copper Plate Busts, at 5s. each." Although the trade label is long gone from the back of the 5 1/4" x 4 1/4" papier mache frame, there is little doubt in my mind of the Gillespie attribution.   Circa 1810.

(#3472)      $695
