Fun naïve folk watercolor portrait of a baby in a blue dress, red shoes, white bonnet and holding a bouquet of flowers. The flowers may mean this is a girl, but this in not a sure bet because flowers, (especially roses which appear to be part of this bouquet) were an often used symbol of a long-life ahead and were, therefore, often used in portraits of children of both sexes. The dress, shoes and caul-shaped bonnet worn under an over-cap made with a draw-string to adjust the head-piece to the growing child's head all date this portrait to the first half of the 19th century (babys' fashions did not change much in that 50 year period). In a 6 3/8" x 7 1/4" mahogany veneer frame. Good condition with overall toning and fading. The fading is quite normal and expected with these folk watercolor paintings which were painted quickly and with an eye towards conserving paint which was very precious to an itinerant artist.
