Wonderful portrait miniature on ivory of a well-dressed gentleman with blue frock-coat with collar that appears to be velvet, striped weskit, white cravat of wispy transparent material tied in a bow and falling gently over the lapel of his coat.  He wears his hair in a natural style, combed back and falling slightly over his collar.  The papier mâché frame is made in a highly unusual shield shape, much like the Hepplewhite Period chairs of the late 18th century.  The brass surround of the frame is decorated with an inner circle of reeding.  A background of blue sky with wispy clouds is off his proper left shoulder.  The man's clothing indicates a period of circa 1780 but his whiskers indicate a period of 1800.  Just like today, some older people wore slightly out of date clothing because they felt more comfortable in the styles they had previously worn.  Because of the whiskers, I would date this portrait to circa 1800.  The frame measures 5" at the widest x 5 1/2" not including the hanging loop.  Image size is 2" x 2 1/2".
