Sweet watercolor portrait miniature on ivory of a red-haired little child.  The long hair and fringe in front was worn by both girls and boys.  Until the age of four, boys were "in coats" meaning that he still wore dresses and petticoats or skirts.  Both sexes also wore frills around their necks, as this child wears.  However, the frills of boys dresses were generally higher while the frills around a young girl's neck was worn low, ending at the bosom.  The low neck of this red-haired child's dress indicates this is likely a girl.  Her pale coral-colored dress and lace is lovely with her red hair and pink-orange cheeks and lips.  The dark background is painted in a cross-hatched manner.  The rose-gold pendant frame of this 18th century portrait measures 1 1/2" x 2" tall (not including the hanger).  The back shows that it was at one time worn as a pinned brooch--the c-clasp and the hinged part of the pin still resides on the back.  I think the pin was a later addition because it is yellow-gold in color instead of the rose-gold color of the rest of the pendant, including the hanger (which is probably original).  The back is beautifully inscribed "SL".  The original glass is beveled at the edge.  Circa 1780-1800.
