This is a delightful naïve watercolor on ivory portrait miniature of Lieutenant Jon Bunting and his wife.  I'm sorry that the photos don't do this fun portrait justice but the glass is so curved that I can't get a photo without a lot of reflection.  I would take it out of the turned wood frame to photograph it, but it doesn't look as if it's ever been out of the frame and, in this rare case, I won't break the seal.  The Buntings are a wonderful pair and the inscription on the verso of the unbroken seal says "Lieut Jon Bunting / Field hain[?] Dept / Royal [?] Artillary / Many years an Officer / in the Durham Militia".  As you can see, I'm not sure of some of the words which isn't helped by the fact that I'm not familiar with 19th century British military.  I find Mrs. Bunting delightful, although not the happiest looking woman I've seen!  Circa 1825.  The turned wood frame measures 5" in diameter while the image size is about 2 3/4" in diameter.  Circa 1825.
