Really wonderful folk portrait of a young 18th century boy....or, I should say a young man.  Despite his very young-looking appearance, the brown waistcoat and orange striped vest worn by this child  means that his family considers him as entering manhood--he is now past wearing children's clothing.  This wonderfully naïve circa 1780 portrait is delicately stippled watercolor on ivory.  The 1 3/8" x 1 7/8" silver brooch frame has a small dent to the edge, as can be seen in the photo below.  I'm always delighted to find folky portrait miniatures on ivory!  I'd say he is about 11 or 12 at the oldest.
