Back to Pewter

American pewter porringer with a heart handle of the type used by Richard Lee (1788-1820, NH, Mass, Vt) and Richard Lee, Jr. (Springfield, VT 1795-1816) and Roswell Gleason (Dorchester, Mass. 1821-1871). See Montgomery, Charles F., A History of American Pewter.  E.P. Dutton New York, 1978 ed. 151.  The bellied bowl with a boss or slight dome in the center of a flat bottom has a diameter of approximately 4 1/2".  The porringer measures 6 1/2" to the tip of the handle and stands 1 5/8" tall.  The bowl is slightly misshapen, and the body has a few dents.  There is a slight curve to handle, but no apparent repairs, and the piece has a bright clean patina. A faint linen mark can be seen on the inside of bowl.  A previous owner inscribed the outside lip of bowl with an identification number.  A nice early porringer of good size and presence.

(#4374)     $435
