I am so pleased to offer this fantastic American paint decorated box
from the 19th century. The front of the box has a well-done eagle
clasping arrows and a classic “E Pluribus Unum” banner. The top
is beautifully painted with two hummingbirds at their nest, flowers,
palm fronds and other foliage. The background is brown with gilt painted
edges accented by red pinstripes. The box shows lots of good wear. There
is a sliver of wood missing from the back edge that has been darkened to
blend in. The inside of the box is wonderfully grain painted, the hinges
appear to be original but the lock has been replaced. Dovetailed
construction. The painting is so fantastic that I initially thought it
was a transfer…but close inspection shows it is all hand-painted. The
eagle’s head is mostly worn away as it covers the lock. But the
painting is really spectacular! Clearly the artist used her
imagination to invent the wonderful avian scene atop this box. The
hummingbird at the upper center has a crest even though I'm not familiar
with any crested hummers. This is great American folk art! 11 3/4” x 8
3/4” x 4 3/4”.
