This is a great folky pair of late 19th century miniature cast iron
mirrors. The casting for both mirrors is great with toothed and
beaded edges and a great shell ornamentation on top. The larger
mirror is 3 3/8" x 5 1/4". It has the original mirror with silver
losses throughout and a bit of glass loss in the lower left corner.
One or two of the iron tabs that held the back in place and, as you can
see in one of the photos below, I've added some archival linen tap to
the paper backing to hold it all together. This mirror would need
a string or fabric loop added to the top for it to hang on the wall.
The mirrors do, however, look spectacular sitting on small easels or
even laying flat on a table. The smaller mirror is 2 7/16" x 3 7/16". It has slightly more overall rust on the frame, giving it more of a reddish color than the blacker large mirror. The mirror in this smaller has been replaced with mirror of the correct period. The silver is spotty but has no actual losses. The top of the reverse on the smaller mirror has cast wording that I can't make out completely....but think it has to do with patent information. I've shown you a detailed photo below, but the best I can make out is "PATP(?)FEB599" [I'm not sure if I've interpreted the numbers correctly.] The smaller mirror is backed with a partial handbill or trade label that says: "Machine or Hand Sewing / All Numbers Warranted Six / Cord from 8 to 100." Someone has attached an early string cord to the back tabs of this mirror for hanging. I love these mirrors and if anyone has info about their manufacture, please let me know! (#4465C) $395/pair |
