Great 19th century brass candlestick with a knob candle-stump ejector.  Prior to 1700, the only method of clearing the candle cups of candlesticks was with a sharp tool and a lot of digging.  The first to replace the simple hole in the side of the candle cup was a lateral slide ejector, such as you see here.  Soon, these became increasingly less common as the simple push rod was placed through the center of most hollow candlestick bodies.  But some ejector type candlesticks continued to be made through the 19th century.  This lovely candlestick has a beautifully shaped knob ejector that still works smoothly.   The more defined step-down of the base dates this stick to the last half of the 19th century.  This simple beauty measures 7 1/4" tall with a 3 7/8" diameter base.  There is a bit of a wave to the candle cup, but no repairs that I can find.  Currently I'm offering enough 19th century candlesticks to give you a lovely collection very inexpensively.  See the last photo for the whole collection.
