19th century young ladies of refinement spent much of their days painting and sewing to show potential suitors that they were educated and had the skills necessary to promote a refined lifestyle.  Watercolor painting was a popular hobby for adolescent girls and young ladies in the last half of the 18th through the first half of the 19th centuries.  This is an absolutely charming American watercolor of a young girl in red dress petting her pet rabbit. Titled "Playing Mother" and signed on the verso by "W.C. Ireland". Likely taken from a print source as prints were often copied by young girls in academies and after graduation.  Circa 1835 in a period gilt frame measuring 9" x 7".
