A really beautiful freehand pinprick, signed or inscribed to "FM" and dated "1860". Pinpricks were often done from patterns, and it is unusual to find such large pieces designed by the artist. This artist folded the paper into eighths and pierced beautiful hearts, pinwheels, what appears to be flower topped urns (similar to stencil designs), and a nicely complicated border. The center has worn away where the paper bore the most stress from the folding--it may have been tucked away in a book before framing. Framed in a period 22" x 22" walnut frame behind early glass and on a black mat.
