A lovely mid-Victorian Era painting on silk of a handled basket filled with flowers such as tulips, daisies, passion flower and lilies.  The basket is done in two shades of bright blue which really highlights the painting.  The background silk is painted a deep eggplant-color.  The painting is signed with a "G" inside of a large "C".  This is the type of painting that late 19th century ladies painted to show off their talents and to show the world that they had the leisure time to enjoy their artwork.  The paint is a water-based paint, either tempura or gouache.  I've framed this lovely painting edged with a acid-free blue paper that perfectly picks up the blue basket.  All of this has gone into a 12 1/2" x 16 3/4" period frame paint decorated with black over red.  The frame color accentuates the eggplant color of the background silk.  There are two tiny pinholes in either upper corner of the silk where it must have been pinned to a wall at one time.  You really have to search to see the holes.  A lovely piece of American folk art.  Circa 1880.
