The Newfoundland breed of dog was a favorite of 19th century artists for good reason.  A wonderfully regal looking breed of good nature, the Newfie looks like a giant teddy bear.  The color shown here, black head with black and white body, is named "Landseer" after the important artist Sir Edwin Landseer, who was particularly found of including them in his paintings.  This 19th century Newfoundland dog sits atop a stone step, watching for his beloved master.  He is painted in oil on paper which has been laid onto something that looks like masonite--the back has been laid with paper also, so it's difficult to tell exactly what the material is, but it gives a hollow sounding tap...I'm fairly sure it's masonite.  In a 14 1/2" x 12 1/2" veneered wood and gesso frame with some oil gilding (or possibly metal-colored paint).  Circa last quarter of the 19th century.
